I qualified over 20 years ago and worked as a Chartered Tax Advisor for a national accountancy firm for many years before deciding to launch Winham Hughes with Paul, where I head up the tax team. I am passionate about accountancy coupled with the highest level of customer service and this combination along with astute attention to detail has enabled me to retain long term working relationships of over a decade with many of our clients.

Quality and timely advice is core to a first class taxation service and to ensure my knowledge and expertise remains relevant and up-to-date, I build networking, talking to other professionals and an ongoing involvement with the Chartered Institute of Taxation into my everyday working life.

We like to think we’re quite different from most other accountancy firms, for us it’s about ‘getting under the skin’ of businesses and individuals so we can provide tailor-made financial service that will result in growth and success for our clients. I began my accountancy career nearly 20 years ago and like Sally, built up many years of experience at a national accountancy firm before setting up Winham Hughes. As head of the accounts team I work with a wide range of clients including individuals, sole traders, partnerships, limited companies and UK subsidiaries of overseas companies, encompassing a variety of different sectors. As Winham Hughes has grown we are proud to have immersed ourselves in the Peterborough business community through awards sponsorship, professional seminars and involvement with college trainee programmes.

Why Winham Hughes is More Than Just Numbers for me…

We don’t fit into the ‘traditional accountancy firm’ mould. Even though we deliver the full remit of accountancy services, our relationship with our clients goes much wider. I am regularly asked to attend client management and business strategy meetings, all of which adds to the deeper understanding of our clients’ businesses enabling us to offer more tailored advice and recommendations.

I am responsible for accounts preparation, reviewing our accounts assistant’s jobs and answering general queries. My role involves regularly meeting with clients, solving any queries they may have and also training clients on Sage financial software.

For me being an accountant isn’t just calculating people’s tax bill. At Winham Hughes I get to know all our clients and their businesses. I like that I’m able to help make their lives a bit easier, not just at the end of year, but day to day.

Because we know all our clients personally. We put them at ease which means they don’t hesitate to ask if they need help, whether it’s a simple bookkeeping issue or a more complicated query. Many accountants can be intimidating, and I believe that creates a barrier between them and their clients. Removing that barrier and creating a friendly relationship is the target. Every client is important no matter how big or small the client is, they are treated the same way.

Accounts Assistant

At Winham Hughes I’m responsible for all aspects of bookkeeping. The majority of my time is spent at clients’ premises, and I really enjoy the flexibility of my role. Working at several different locations with different people each day means lots of variety and different challenges.

Flexibility for our clients is what we do best! I will always dedicate whatever time is required to fit around the clients’ needs, processes and deadlines – even if that means unusual hours. I even bake cakes regularly for one of the clients I work with… all part of building strong relationships and first class service!

Tax Advisor/Payroll Manager

I joined Winham Hughes in 2013 and I work in the personal tax team and oversee our payroll service. We have been working with many clients recently to guide them through the auto-enrolment process.

I like to get to know the people who I deal with regularly and build a rapport with them.

As a friendly member of the team, I take time to listen to any issues, never hurry a client and I will always remind our clients of looming tax return deadlines without nagging them too much!

Accounts and Payroll Assistant

At Winham Hughes I work in the bookkeeping and payroll team. I am responsible for the preparation of VAT returns, bookkeeping and management accounts both in the office and at client’s premises. I am also responsible for the preparation of monthly and quarterly payrolls for our clients.

My role involves regular contact with clients and helping them with any accounting software issues.

Last minute requests for payroll changes adds to the pressure but I will never let it show even if it means staying later. We aim to make sure that we always meet our client’s deadlines in a friendly manner.
